Description
- Plan and prepare for installation by reading and interpreting job reference material, selecting hand/power tools and testing equipment, performing site inspections, selecting/verifying cable pathways/spaces and performing trade calculations
- Perform cable installations inside and outside plants by laying out and creating openings for cable pathways, installing pulling medium in cable pathways, laying out and installing cable and supports, inspecting and preparing cables for installation, and installing fibre backbone and copper cables, horizontal cables and firestop systems
- Terminate/splice cables by installing mounting equipment, fibre and copper terminating and splicing components, electrical protection equipment, grounding, bonding connections/cables, cross connecting and patching cables
- Perform labelling, testing and documentation by labelling cable systems as Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), Shielded Twisted Pair (STP), Screened Twisted Pair (ScTP) and completing field documentation
- Perform internet-working installation by confirming networking needs and identifying, selecting, installing and testing internet-working hardware and components
- Troubleshoot cable systems/hardware by identifying and repairing UTP/STP/ScTP, coaxial cable systems, equipment connecting cables and fibre optic systems
- Perform professional business practices and effective communication with customers

- Network cabling specialists are required to keep pace with new equipment, new work specifications and ever-changing technology
Educational/Training Requirements
- The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
- Completion of a 4,000 hour apprenticeship program is required
- If you have completed 4,500 hours of on the job experience/training but have not completed the apprenticeship program you may be eligible to challenge the Certificate of Qualification

Potential Earnings
- Apprentices progress along an individual company’s scale at a rate set by the company
- Wages 1 range from $13.18 to $27.66 an hour, excluding overtime, with journeypersons usually earning the higher end of the pay scale

Financial Incentives
- Employers who employ first, second and third year apprentices may apply for the Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit
